Winter Storm Warning in effect for mountain areas in north Puget Sound

Areas above 3,000 feet elevation in Whatcom and Skagit counties are expected to get an estimated one to two feet of snow in a 24-hour period.

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for parts Skagit and Whatcom counties, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The warning is in effect until 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Areas above 3,000 feet elevation are expected to get anywhere from 1 to 2 feet of snow in a 24-hour period. 

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for areas of Snohomish, King, Pierce, and Lewis counties that are above 3,000 feet in elevation until 4 a.m. Wednesday. Those areas could see between 6 to 18 inches of snow. Stevens and Snoqualmie pass, the Crystal Mountain Ski Area, and Paradise at Mount Rainier are included in the advisory.

The heaviest snow amounts are expected at Stevens Pass and Paradise, the NWS said.

For elevation reference, Stevens Pass is 4,061 feet and Snoqualmie Pass is 3,022 feet.

The snow levels in King County are expected to go up to 4,000 feet on Wednesday, bringing in rain. 

Snow will turn to rain on Snoqualmie Pass on Wednesday. Stevens Pass could see a rain-snow mixture. Drivers should use caution on the passes with the changing conditions. 

River flooding is possible later in the week as snow levels rise above 5,000 feet. Three to six inches of rain are expected in the mountains from Wednesday to Saturday.
