Wildfire smoke moves into Western Washington

If it looks hazy outside to you, here's why: wildfires.

Smoke from eastern Washington wildfires may have blown over the Cascades into western Washington, creating a hazy atmosphere Tuesday.

Quite a few people reported smelling smoke and/or are seeing some haze around the interior of western Washington on Tuesday morning. It seems to be pretty light but widespread with people all the way from Federal Way to Bellingham noticing it.

Although we did have some west winds that brought marine air inland as far as Shelton and Interstate 5 south of Olympia today, Northwest Avalanche Center weather instruments in the Cascades indicate east winds are still blowing through the passes and over the Cascade Crest.

You can see from the Crystal Mountain Gondola and from the top of Mission Ridge that there is some smoke in the mountains and on the east side of the Cascades.

It is likely the smoke people are smelling is from the Rocky Reach and Little Camas wildfires located north and west of Wenatchee, respectively. However, it doesn't appear to have affected air quality significantly, as most places in western Washington are reporting good air quality.

The smoke won't be around for long. You can see the marine clouds are clinging to the coast and they will be moving inland with stronger west winds Tuesday night pushing the smoke back east of the Cascades. Unfortunately, as those winds spill over the Cascades later Tuesday, they will be fanning the existing fires. This has led to a red flag warning for the east slopes of the central Cascades and the Columbia Basin.
