Many areas in Western Washington were colder than the Arctic coast of Alaska early Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather service released several maps showing early morning temperatures near Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia hovering between 26 to 28 degrees at about 4 a.m. Areas near Bellingham were between 21 and 25 degrees, and some areas of the Cascade foothills were between 11 and 19 degrees.
However, Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska, which is the northernmost town in the United States, registered at a balmy 30 degrees. Wevok, Alaska, which south of Utqiagvik but still in the Arctic Circle, was 34 degrees.
Western Washington is bracing for bitter cold through Tuesday. Most areas won’t get out of the 30’s, and some schools have closed or delayed classes due to cold.
However, we did not break any cold weather records at Sea-Tac Airport. Clouds overnight kept our low temperature above 25 degrees, which was the record set on February 20, 1955.
