WB US 2 to be closed between Everett, Snohomish this weekend

Work on westbound U.S. 2 between I-5 and SR 9 will close the roadway from Friday evening to Monday morning.

A construction closure on westbound U.S. 2 between Everett and Snohomish is planned for this weekend.

The state plans to close the highway from Friday, August 2 at 7 p.m. to Monday, August 5 at 4 a.m. from Interstate 5 to State Route 9.

The Washington State Department of Transportation has had to delay the closure multiple times due to weather. There was rain Friday morning, but the rest of the weekend is expected to be warm and dry.

Contractor crews plan to continue work that began last year on the Hewitt Avenue trestle.

During the closure crews with Lakeside Industries will remove old asphalt, inspect the trestle, repave, make repairs, and put down a waterproof barrier.

WSDOT says the trestle was last repaved in 2002, outliving its 15-year lifespan. Since then potholes, cracks, and ruts have developed.

Drivers should expect lengthy delays during the August closure. During a similar closure in 2018, WSDOT says an estimated one-third of the 2,600 drivers who normally take that route at that time adjusted their habits, but there were still hour-long backups.

Travelers will detour around the closure on SR 9.

Since the closure is weather dependent, WSDOT has already canceled three weekends of work this summer due to poor conditions.

Last year contractors got four full-weekend closures to rehabilitate the westbound trestle before fall hit, and the work was shelved until spring. There are expected to be two more closures this summer before the work is finished.

WSDOT has tentatively scheduled the following dates for trestle work:

  • August 2 – 5
  • August 9 – 12
  • August 16 – 19

WSDOT does not plan to rehabilitate the eastbound lanes, because they are newer and made with concrete.
