OLYMPIA, Wash. — Southbound Interstate 5 reopened early Saturday morning in Olympia following a carjacking, standoff and confrontation that led to one man being shot by police.
Aerial footage showed the man climbing out of the cab of the semi-truck and running at police before falling to the ground.
The Thurston County coroner confirmed the man was killed at the scene.
KING 5's Drew Mikkelsen reported hearing several loud bangs, as well as police giving the man several commands as he exited the semi-truck.
The incident started sometime before 2 p.m. when a pedestrian carjacked a semi-truck and rolled it, according to Washington State Trooper Robert Reyer.
The carjacker refused to exit the semi and state patrol tried to negotiate with him. He was reportedly armed with a hammer.
A number of cars were also struck by the semi. The driver of the semi-truck is OK and did not suffer any injuries.
The state patrol and Washington State Department of Transportation crews responded to the scene.
WSDOT Tacoma tweeted that all lanes of I-5 were blocked due to the incident. I-5 fully reopened just after 6 a.m. Saturday.
