I-5 brush fire causes $70K worth of damage, threatened homes

A brush fire closed at multiple lanes of northbound I-5 near Boeing Field Friday morning. All lanes are back open.

A brush fire that shut down a portion of Interstate 5 Friday morning caused approximately $70,000 in damages to two nearby structures, according to the Seattle Fire Department.

Aaron Chau awoke to a neighbor pounding on the door of his family's home.

"I opened the blinds and just saw orange sky," he said.

The fire was on the side of the interstate just south of South Albro Place near Boeing Field. It spread up the hill into South Beacon Hill, crossing Military Rd S.

It was burning in Chau's yard. The family tried to fight it with a garden house while they waited for fire crews to arrive.

"It was definitely scary to hear the crackle, the spark of the flames," said Chau.

Other neighbors worried it could have spread up further into the neighborhood.

There were no reported injuries, and only one home suffered minor exterior damage. Chau's home was not touched.

Sparks from a vehicle traveling on northbound I-5 ignited nearby brush, according to Seattle Fire. The cause has been ruled accidental.
