The official NFL offseason is here! On Monday, the Seattle Seahawks report for duty at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton for day one of the offseason workout program.
The offseason workout programs are voluntary and are “intended to provide training, teaching and physical conditioning for players,” per the NFL press release.
Article 21 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) provides for the nine-week program, which is broken down into three phases.
Phase One, which begins Monday for Seattle, consists of the first two weeks of the program. All activities are limited to strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation only as stated in the CBA.
The next three weeks of the program, Phase Two, allow for on-field workouts and team practice conducted on a “separates” basis (no offense vs. defense) but no live contact is allowed.
Phase Three is when things get more interesting. During the final four weeks, teams may conduct 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills although contact is still prohibited.
Organized team activities and the team’s mandatory minicamp occur during this final phase.
