Jackson High School in Mill Creek is one of the teams favored to win the Class 4A state softball title, and they’re led by a pitcher named “Ice” and a super-star shortstop and catcher.

The Timberwolves are 17-1 and have outscored their opponents 169-18.

"Every team has their struggles, but we've had a lot of talks about being there for each other, playing for the team, and not playing for yourself and being selfish," said senior shortstop Kristina Day, who’s batting nearly .500.

Day also likes to play defense, but she admits when junior pitcher Iyanla Pennington is on the mound, there's not always much to do.

“When she is in the zone, she is unhittable,” said Day, who’s headed for University of Massachusetts next year.

Head Coach Kyle Peacocke said Pennington is probably the best pitcher he’s ever had.

Her nickname is Ice, and while she loves to freeze batters, it's senior catcher Sam Mutolo calling the shots. Mutolo will play softball for Western Washington University next year.

“If I didn't trust her, it would be way easier for the other team to hit balls, because I'd be trying to control my balls a lot more than I do,” said Pennington.
