Washington State defensive lineman Hercules Mata'afa announced on Twitter that he's leaving early for the NFL Draft.

The redshirt junior is bypassing his senior year of eligibility to enter the draft.

Mata'afa was a consensus All-American this season. He also led the Pac-12 with 22.5 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. The Associated Press named him the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.

He's a bit undersized for a defensive lineman at 6'2" and 252 pounds. Cougars coach Mike Leach texted the Seattle Times and said that the NFL strongly suggests Mata'afa stay in college. Leach agreed with the league's assessment, but supports his decision.

College football players have until January 15 to apply for the draft.
