How the Swedish Foundation uses donations to fuel high-quality care

Donations to the Swedish Foundation fund advanced technology, cutting-edge research, nursing support programs, and more. Sponsored by the Swedish.

SEATTLE — Providence Swedish is the largest not-for-profit healthcare provider in the Pacific Northwest and has been servicing patients in the community for more than 100 years with the help of donors.

“Our team at the Foundation really helps to enhance the projects and programs through philanthropy,” said Samantha Vanover, vice president of development, Swedish Medical Center Foundation.

One hundred percent of donations given to the Swedish Foundation go directly to programs and services at Swedish. This includes research, patient and family support services, and the highest standards in patient care.

“Every single dollar that comes to the Foundation, it impacts patient care, it impacts research and innovation at Swedish,” Vanover said.

Many donations come from patients who want to give back to their physicians, nurses and caregivers. While many donors give to the greatest need fund, allowing the Foundation to direct funds where they’re needed most, some donors prefer to donate to where they were treated.

“We can direct their donation anywhere they would like,” Vanover said. “We can get very specific around a type of research, an institute and even a subspeciality or program.”

Nurses have been impacted heavily by COVID and staffing shortages, and their mental health is a priority at Swedish. Philanthropy has helped Swedish offer a nursing retreat where more than 200 nurses have had the opportunity to build skills for self-care and alleviate stress.

Another nursing program funded by donations is specifically for nurses new to the profession. It pairs nursing graduates at the beside with seasoned nurses who train them in real time during patient care experiences.
