Monday brings the return of Russell Wilson to Seattle - Hawk Zone

We look ahead to the Seahawks’ first game against Denver and the rest of the season with quarterback Geno Smith at the helm. Sponsored by Muckleshoot Casino.

SEATTLE — The Seahawks will be in primetime on Monday Night Football against a familiar face. Russell Wilson will be back as the new quarterback for the Denver Broncos.

Wilson’s former Seahawks teammates know him and his style of play well, but the coaching staff in Denver has him doing some new things.

“Maybe there’s going to be a little bit of gamesmanship there with knowing what Russell is doing, but he might switch it up on us,” Terry Hollimon said.

Wilson also knows a lot about his former teammates, so it should be quite the showdown for Geno Smith’s regular season debut as starting quarterback. His size will be a key differentiator.

“At 6’3, you’re able to navigate and see the terrain a little bit better than you are being 5’10,” Hollimon said.

Two rookie offensive linemen will provide Smith with increased protection. Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas were drafted this year to boost the offensive line.

“These guys are not only really good right now, but they have so much upside, so much potential that I think they’re going to be two of the big steals for the Seahawks from the draft.”

Fans take great pride in Seattle sports teams, so it’s important for the team to get momentum going early.

“I think Seattle is a town that when the professional teams and even the college teams are playing well, I think the entire city feels better about it.”

The 12s make the atmosphere at Lumen Field electric and make it difficult for opposing teams. When the team is playing well, the environment at the stadium benefits.

“We want to be winners,” Hollimon said. “When the team is winning, the fans are full speed. I mean, there’s no better place to play in America than Seattle.”

Hollimon encourages fans to be along for the ride this entire season.

“It’s a long season, and I want to let the fans know and understand that even if things don’t start off right and the way you want them too, it’s a long season and things will change. The team will get better.”
