Wildfire smoke has drifted into Western Washington, blowing in from several fires east of the Cascades and a new fire near Mount Rainier.

The air quality is considered Good or Moderate in most areas of Washington state, but wildfire smoke is expected to get worse before it gets better.

The moon appeared a shade of red as it drifted through the smoke layers over Seattle Sunday night.

A red flag warning is in effect for the Cascades through 11 p.m. Monday. That means critical fire weather conditions are either imminent or occurring now, according to the National Weather Service: "Any fires that develop will likely spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended."

Smoke from Siberia continues to permeate the air in Washington, along with fires in Canada, Chelan, and Eastern Washington.

The Washington Smoke Information site predicts a shift in the wind and cool down for Western Washington by Tuesday, prompting a slow exit of smoky skies. Eastern Washington should experience the same by Wednesday.

However, a shift in the wind may fan wildfire flames, prompting concern for new or worsening fires.
