Woman steals Kent police vehicle while officers make arrest

A pursuit involving a stolen police vehicle ended early Friday morning near Snoqualmie.

A woman suspected of stealing a Kent police vehicle led law enforcement on a chase that ended on eastbound I-90 near Highway 18 early Friday morning.

Exit 25 was closed following the pursuit that involved multiple agencies. No injuries were reported.

The chase started around 2:30 a.m. when Kent police contacted a "suspicious" man with an arrest warrant and a woman behind Kentridge High School. The two ran from police on foot.

The officer called for backup and eventually the man was found by a police K9.

Police said the officer was walking the man back to the cruiser when police realized the vehicle was gone.

A chase ensued. It ended with the arrest of the 38-year-old woman before 5 a.m. near the Highway 18/I-90 interchange.

The police vehicle sustained a lot of damage and is most likely totaled, according to officers.

Kent Police Assistant Chief Jarod Kasner said the door to the cruiser was most likely unlocked. There is no policy regarding locking the cruiser doors when on patrol, although it is encouraged.

Kasner said the officer will not be penalized, but the department will assess what went wrong to see if any change to policy needs to be made.
