Deadline nearing for dozens of legislative bills

Several gun-related bills have yet to pass in their originating chambers.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Wednesday evening is the deadline for dozens of legislative bills in Olympia to pass in their originating chambers.

That includes several gun-related bills.

HB 2240 would ban the manufacture, possession, sale and transfer of high capacity magazines.

Some supporters of the ban argue that many mass shootings are committed with high-capacity magazines that increase the number of rounds that can be fired in a short amount of time.

Other gun law advocates, however, suggest lawmakers should focus on mental health.

SB 6307 would make threatening to commit mass violence a felony offense.

Supporters of the bill have said more than half of all shootings begin with some sort of verbal or written threats from the shooter.

The punishment would be up to five years in prison and law enforcement would be able to take any firearms, ammunition or concealed carry permits they believe could be a threat.

SB 6294 would require concealed carry permit holders to do eight hours of training that would tackle safe handling, firearm storage, state laws, use of deadly force and suicide prevention, etc.

Other bills facing the deadline include a bill what would allow undocumented immigrants to apply for state loans and a bill that would give Washington residents more control of their data.
