OKANOGAN CO., Wash. – The U.S. Navy grounded the Whidbey Island-based air crew they believe to be responsible for skywriting obscene images in the Okanogan County sky.
Photos sent to KREM 2 by multiple sources showed what appeared to be a drawing of male genitalia on Thursday.
“U.S. Navy air crew, flying an F/A-18 Growler (Electronic Attack Aircraft) assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 130 based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Wash., flew an air pattern over Okanogan County, Wash., on Thursday, Nov. 16, that left a condensed air trail resembling an obscene image to observers on the ground,” U.S. Navy officials said in a statement Friday.
Thursday officials had confirmed one of their aircraft had been involved in the incident, then Friday elaborated on the planned U.S. Navy response.
“We have grounded the aircrew and are conducting a thorough investigation - and we will hold those responsible accountable for their actions,” officials wrote in a statement. “The Navy apologizes for this irresponsible and immature act.”
Officials went on to say they apologized for the “unacceptable action” and are investigating.
“An investigation into this flight will be conducted and if appropriate, the aviator(s) responsible will be held accountable,” officials wrote.
A mother who lives in Okanogan who took pictures of the drawings reached out to KREM 2 to complain about the images. The Federal Aviation Administration said there was nothing they could do when they spoke with KREM on Thursday. An official said unless the act poses a safety risk, there is nothing they can do about it.
