UW students rally for alum's release from Iranian prison

University of Washington international school alumnus, Xiyue Wang has been in Iranian prison since 2016

The University of Washington Jackson School for International studies held a rally Tuesday calling for the release of Xiyue Wang from an Iranian prison.

Wang was conducting research for his dissertation on the late 19th-century Eurasian history when he was arrested in Iran. He had a trial with no due process according to the Jackson School Student Association.

The rally appealed to the State Department, elected officials, and the President after his decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear agreement.

Among the attendees were Wang's family, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal's office, the Seattle Human Rights Council, UW Law, the UW Center for Human Rights, and a former political prisoner from Nicaragua.

With the release of three hostages in North Korea Wednesday, the Jackson School hopes that will encourage Wang's release.
