OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Monday night county commissioners voted to pass a ban prohibiting the sale and discharge of fireworks during periods of extreme fire danger in unincorporated Thurston County.
Fireworks will not be allowed only when a burn ban is in place. The county considered a more severe measure that would completely ban fireworks, but it did not pass.
The county is following the lead of its biggest cities. The lighting or sale of fireworks in Olympia and Lacey has already been deemed illegal. Next July in Tumwater fireworks will be banned if conditions warrant, due to fire hazard.
A public hearing on the ban in unincorporated areas is scheduled for Monday night at 5:30 p.m. at the county commissioner’s chamber in Olympia.
