The Ellen DeGeneres record-breaking Oscars selfie is benefiting animals in a big way.

She is directing $1.5 million to The Humane Society of the United States after Samsung decided to give a dollar to her designated charity for every re-tweet of that star-studded selfie at Sunday night s Academy Awards.

The picture, which was snapped by Bradley Cooper (using a Samsung phone), included Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Jared Leto and others.

Ellen tweeted the photo to her 27 million followers and it became the most re-tweeted in history, with more than 3 million people sending out the picture.

Wayne Pacelle of HSUS said in a blog post Tuesday that the donation will be devided among three of The HSUS programs: Pets for Life, the Shelter Pet Project and the Animal Rescue Team.

Pacelle said Ellen is the leading celebrity voice for animal protection in our nation, and we are so lucky to have her on our side.

And all of us at The HSUS are so honored she chose to invest in our work, given all of the other worthy charities that serve animals and people.

St. Jude's Research Hospital for children will also receive $1.5 million.
