The Other Side: Local police, civilians strive to understand each other amid national tension

We asked officers and civilians for solutions to improve relationships with each other.

SEATTLE -- Amid simmering national tensions between police officers and the communities they protect, some local cops and civilians are starting a conversation toward change.

We asked officers, "How can civilians improve their interactions with officers?"

We asked civilians, "How can police improve their interactions with civilians?"

They wrote their answers on cardboard and we photographed them.

Their ideas come in the wake of a deadly week for police and civilians. Last Thursday, a sniper shot 14 people and killed five Dallas police officers at a Black Lives Matter protest. Earlier that week, two fatal officer-involved shootings in Baton Rouge and Falcon Heights, Minnesota sparked national outcry and led to Seattle-area protests.

Teddy Morada, 60, is homeless in Seattle.

Chris Webb, 49, is a trooper at the Washington State Highway Patrol.

Bridget Smolen, 59, is a Portland resident.

Christine Masters is a deputy at the King County Sheriff's Office.

Noah An, 20, is a Seattle resident.

Leasa Grove, 50, is a Tukwila native.

Tim Cumming, 27, is a police officer at the Renton Police Department.

Yahshua Jones, 35, is a resident of Kent.

Todd Morell is a sergeant at the King County Sheriff's Department.

Brian Kenny, 42, is a Seattle resident.

Mercedes Reed, 27, is a Seattle resident.

Dave Leibman, 58, is a commander at the Renton Police Department.

Bob Steffes, 55, is a Seattle resident.

Jon Schuldt, 45, is the commander of the patrol division at the Renton Police Department.
