Two Tacoma teens will be paid $1 million after an off-duty police officer used excessive force in the Tacoma Mall parking lot in 2014.
Monique Tillman and her brother will receive $450,000 for attorney’s fees, in addition to the $550,000 payout a jury awarded them in March.
The payout for the attorney’s fees was negotiated, the City of Tacoma said Wednesday.
Tillman, who was 15 years old at the time of the incident, and her brother had been riding their bikes around the parking lot when they were stopped by officers for creating a disturbance. Tillman maintains she wasn’t doing anything wrong.
Video shows Tacoma Police officer Jared Williams, who was working mall security at the time, throw Tillman to the ground and use his taser.
A federal court jury found Williams used excessive force and violated Tillman’s constitutional rights.
