A 28-year-old cold case could be one step closer to justice.

In 1989, 18-year-old Mandy Stavik left her home Whatcom County home to go jogging with her family dog. The dog returned several hours later, but Mandy did not.

Just recently, DNA evidenced linked her death to now 50-year-old Timothy Bass, who's accused of raping and murdering the young woman.

During a brief court appearance Friday morning, Bass was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and first-degree rape for what happened to Mandy Stavik on the day after Thanksgiving some 28 years ago.

Bass was arrested by detectives on December 12.

Authorities say at the time of her death, Bass lived close to Stavik's house. Authorities say a recent DNA match determined the probability at 1 in 11 quadrillion.

Bass quickly pleaded not guilty, which is pretty normal for an arraignment.

A judge set his trial for February 12.
