Smoke closes outdoor pools, summer camps in Tacoma

Tacoma is suffering from the bad air, forcing the city to close some recreation centers.

Tacoma shut down a number outdoor recreational activities Monday as a result of unhealthy air conditions due to wildfire smoke.

Michael Thompson, a spokesperson for Metro Parks, said its closed all outdoor pools and sports camps and at least one outdoor park due to the smoke.

“This is an evolving situation for western Washington its new territory for us. Right now, its day by day but we expect it to be like this in Western Washington for some time to come,” said Thompson.

Metro Parks has four indoor community centers that are open to the public if you’re looking to get away from the smoke.

For those working outside, like Postman Bruce Stovall, an outdoor face mask has been an essential tool to combat the conditions on his North Tacoma route.

“In my lungs, yeah I can feel it, but primarily you still gotta get out here and grind,” said Stovall.

At Kandle Park, Cece and her kids were ready for the smoke to clear.

“Yeah, I hope so, I don’t know how long it will take cause we don’t know," she said.

They planned to go to the pool Monday but the doors were closed and the smoke is having an impact on her family

“Yes, especially my kid, she had a headache now.”
