Software developer now most common Seattle job

The industry is dominated by men.

Software developers take the top spot as Seattle's most common job with more than 61,000 jobs in the field, The Seattle Times reports.

Retail salespersons come in second place with 55,840 jobs according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That position is still the most common across the United States.

Laborers and freight, stock, and material movers take third place. food preparation and serving works are in fourth, and office clerks take the fifth spot.

Seattle also pays a higher wage to computer programmers compared to the rest of the country. An average hourly wage for programmers is $59.76 in Seattle compared to $42.08 in the U.S.

Retail salespersons are also paid a higher wage in Seattle at $17.18 per hour compared to $13.20 on average in the U.S.

But tech jobs are highly gendered. The Seattle Times analyzed the labor data by gender and found that four out of five software developers were men. Maintenance, repair workers, and truck drivers are also primarily male. Conversely, secretaries, nurses, and teachers assistants are primarily female.
