Puget Sound commuters are in the final stretch of the 'Seattle Squeeze,' the period of traffic without the viaduct or the new SR 99 tunnel.
The first two weeks went relatively well across western Washington. Drivers were urged to stick to a contingency plan since the Alaskan Way Viaduct closed for good on January 11. It had carried 90,000 vehicles every day through downtown Seattle.
Except for a few scattered rain showers, we're expected to have mostly mild weather as crews complete the final steps of tunnel construction.
The new tunnel is on track to open Monday, February 4, after a weekend of grand opening celebrations.
Crews have already started to tear down portions of the viaduct, but full demolition will start a week after the new tunnel opens.
