Seattle startup brings a mystery date to your home while supporting local businesses

A Seattle-based startup is switching gears to help bring the fun of dating to your home while also supporting small businesses.

SEATTLE — Just because we're all ordered to stay at home during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in Washington state doesn't mean you can't have a little fun.

Seattle-based Mystery is bringing a date to your home. The service includes dinner from a local restaurant, an activity, and a dessert. You can also order extra wine and meals.

Before the outbreak, Mystery worked with Lyft drivers who would pick you up and take you out for a night of surprises from various activities at restaurants and bars. Now, the company has changed its model with Gov. Jay Inslee’s “Stay Home, Stay Healthy” order in place, which means the mystery now comes to you.

You don't have to download the Mystery app to order, but you do need to order the date boxes in advance.

Mystery workers use gloves to package up the boxes before delivery. The company is currently working with at least 10 local businesses, so you can support several small businesses on your date at once.

"People are loving this," said Emma Biskupiak, head of marketing for Mystery. "They’re looking for ways to support their local businesses, and they just don’t really know how to do it. So, whenever we came up with a way to give 10-plus small businesses some income with a single transaction, I think that’s the idea that most people have been getting behind."

Biskupiak added it’s also a plus that you get to have some entertainment at home.

She also wants you to keep in mind the date is not going to be as elaborate as it would if you were headed out to a restaurant or bar. It's a little more on the crafty side, she explained. Click here to learn more.
