Scenic lookout near Mount Rainier needs upgrade after decades of fire-spotting

A fire lookout with a panoramic view of the Cascades and Mount Rainier needs some TLC.

For decades, the U.S. Forest Service used the panoramic view from the High Rock Fire Lookout near Mount Rainier to spot signs of wildfire.

While the view hasn't changed since it was built in 1929, the structure has deteriorated. The Forest Service stopped using the lookout in 2005.

But now the outlook is looking up for the lookout.

Volunteers are trying to raise $30,000 to secure the foundation and replace the windows and walls of the crumbling structure.

"Looks like it's falling apart. There's a lot of graffiti, inside there are broken windows," said Dean Robertson. He's one of two Forest Service employees spending the week stabilizing the structure for future renovations.

While the lookout is no longer officially used, it’s a popular spot for visitors because of its panoramic views of the Cascades, particularly Mount Rainier to the east.

“This is definitely the best view of Mount Rainier,” said Meagan Allira, from Roy, Washington. Thursday’s visit was her third to the lookout, which is perched on top of a 600-foot tall cliff.

“Unreal. It gives you the worst vertigo ever,” said Allira, who is willing to face her fears for the view.

“On a super clear day, if there are no clouds, I could be out here all day,” said Allira.
