Three dead, including suspect, after Salem standoff

Marion County deputies forced their way into the home after hearing gunshots. They found three people dead, one woman injured and a 13-year-old boy unharmed.

SALEM, Ore. — A hostage situation in Salem on Monday afternoon ended with three people dead, including the suspect, and another person seriously injured, according to Oregon State Police (OSP).

Marion County sheriff's deputies were called to 244 Juneva Place Southeast at about 12:30 p.m. As they arrived at the scene, a member of the county's hostage negotiation team placed a call to the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Jose Jesus Lopez-Tinoco of Woodburn.

According to OSP investigators, deputies later heard gunshots inside the home and forced their way inside to rescue the hostages. Deputy Ricky Kittelson fired "a yet-to-be-determined number of rounds" inside the home.

Inside, deputies found 24-year-old Diari Bustos-Bustos and an 11-year-old boy both dead from gunshot wounds, police said.

They also found 43-year-old Laura Rocio-Bustos, who had been shot and wounded. Medics took her to a hospital.

An unharmed 13-year-old boy was also rescued from the home.

OSP said Lopez-Tinoco was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Deputy Kittelson has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard police procedure.

OSP will continue to investigate the shooting.
