Yarertzi Colis and her mom Ivee crossed the same street Wednesday morning on their walk to school as they did in April when they were both hit by a car. Yaretzi suffered significant injuries and went through multiple surgeries, missing the rest of the school year.
The Renton community wanted to do something special for the family, and that’s where Washington State Patrol Trooper Chase VanCleave comes in.
Trooper VanCleave helped organize law enforcement and first responders to escort Yaretzi and her mom to Benson Hill Elementary for her first day back to school since the accident.
“This is cool. This is what it’s all about, it’s just an opportunity to help them and welcome them back,” Trooper VanCleave said. “It’s a good day.”
Yaretzi was welcomed with hugs, signs, and cheers from her teachers and classmates.
At times, Yaretzi and her mom were overcome with emotion.
“As a mother, as a driver, and of course a pedestrian, it’s really hard to see your kids hurt,” Yaretzi’s mom said. “But she made it.”
Yaretzi continues physical therapy and rehab for her injuries, but for the first time in months, Yaretzi gets to be a kid again.
