Renton church rolls out red carpet for special needs teens prom

Hundreds of high school proms across the nation treated teens to a night of dinner and dancing they are sure to never forget.
Night to Shine is a free event where we all come together to throw a giant prom designed to honor our friends and family with special needs.

A church in Renton literally rolled out the red carpet for the special needs community Friday night.

Teens and their parents were treated to makeovers, dinner, dancing, and pictures as part of a special prom night for local teens with special needs.

"It would not be a safe place for her to go to a regular high school dance,” said Yvonne Rios who brought her daughter Jacqueline. “To have this opportunity it's just a blessing to us. She loves to dance; she loves to sing. Like I said, there's no other place where you feel safe other than a place like this.”

The event hosted by the New Life Church is one of around 500 being held nationwide though the Tim Tebow Foundation.

“I heard about it from other churches and saw the impact that it had and the love that was spread and thought we have to be a part of this in our community,” said Chelsey Jones of New Life.

“The parents have come to us in tears, you have no idea how this is impacting our child,” continued Jones.

“It means a lot to us because we’ve been doing activities with Jacqueline for years, and to always see that there’s people willing to volunteer and give totally of their time so our kiddos can have a little bit of a semblance of regular life,” said parent Nick Rios.
