Help name Point Defiance Zoo's new red wolf pups

The public is encouraged to vote for their favorite names online. Voting will be open for a few weeks.

Zookeepers in Tacoma need your help to name eight yipping red wolf pups.

The little fur balls, born to mom Charlotte and dad Hyde, entered the world just over two weeks ago at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.

There are two options of names for the five girls and three boys.

Option #1: Buxton, Bogs, Macley, Widgen, Carmur, Slade, Ponser and Mackay.

Zoo staff chose these names because they represent Hyde County, N.C., the wolves’ native range. The pups’ dad was also named after the area when he was born in 2012.

Option #2: Hawthorn, Chester, Cypress, Magnolia, Camellia, Myrtle, Peat and Willow.

These names were selected to represent the varied trees, bushes and plants that grow in the wolves’ native region.

The public is encouraged to vote for their favorite names online. Voting will be open for a few weeks.

The pups are part of the zoo’s program established in 1973 aimed at helping the survival of the critically endangered species.
