Olympia City Council voted Tuesday to move forward with a seasonal ice skating rink on the city’s isthmus property.

The council authorized the city manager to sign a contract with Ice Rink Events once it’s approved by the city legal department.

The rink would be open between November 16, 2018 and January 6, 2019.

Olympia’s Parks, Arts and Recreation Department has explored the idea of opening a seasonal ice rink since buildings were demolished on the isthmus, but the timing hasn’t been right, according to a Council staff report.

“With the renovated property and regular positive feedback from downtown and regional partners, 2018 feels like the right time to move this from idea to reality,” the report read.

The seasonal rink is estimated to generate $366,925 in gross revenue and $2,661 in net revenue with an estimated 9,500 visitors.

Ice Rink Events also hosts seasonal ice rinks in Bellevue and Point Ruston in Tacoma.
