Nickels wants ethics probe into snow response

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels says he wants to know if city transportation crews gave preferrential treatment to his neighborhood.

SEATTLE - Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels is calling for an ethics investigation into whether certain neighborhoods were given preferential treatment to clear snow during the December 2008 storm.

The request comes after a report by The Seattle Times that Seattle Department of Transportation managers instructed crews to clear sidewalk landings and bus stops in West Seattle where the mayor and other senior staff live.

Nickels wants the Ethics and Elections Commission to find out if that actually happened and if it violated the ethics code.

"If I learn that anyone acted improperly or unethically, there will be discipline and consequences," said Nickels in a statement. "The people of Seattle expect every employee to uphold the highest ethical standards and I will not accept anything short of that."< /p>

SDOT disputes the report's findings.
