Latest results show Rossi will face Schrier for 8th District seat in November

Three days after Washington's primary election, two U.S. House races yet to be decided are finally cementing into place for the November general election.

In the 8th Congressional District, Democratic candidate Dr. Kim Schrier retains her lead over attorney Jason Rittereiser for the second spot– leading by more 1,000 votes based on results from Friday night. Given the small number of ballots that remain to be counted--it looks pretty clear that Schrier will advance to the November general election to face Republican Dino Rossi. Rittereiser, however, has not conceded as of late Friday afternoon.

The 8th district is an open seat, this year, since longtime Congressman Dave Reichert is retiring. A Republican has held the position since it was created in 1980, but the district remains a prime target of Democrats looking to pick up seats and take back control of the U.S. House.

The 8th District is vast and diverse, spanning 7,000 square miles and four counties, including parts of Chelan, Kittitas, King, and Pierce counties. It stretches from the eastern suburbs of Seattle across the Cascade Mountains into rural agricultural communities.

It's also among nearly two dozen districts in the country currently held by Republicans but whose voters also chose Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in 2016.

Dr. Kim Schrier, a pediatrician from Issaquah, entered the race last summer, in the months following the Republican Congress's effort to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.

Schrier raised the most money of the Democratic front runners—more than $1.6 million, ahead of the primary, attracting the support of high-profile groups such as Emily’s list—a political action committee that supports female Democratic candidates.

Attorney Jason Rittereiser was one of the early entrants into the race last July. At just 34, he’s also the youngest in the race - a millennial who grew up in Ellensburg but moved to Western Washington for school and work. He served as a prosecutor for King County, then in private practice as an employment attorney.

In Washington's 9th congressional district--it looks like the race to November will feature two Democrats. Sarah Smith, who is challenging incumbent Rep. Adam Smith from the left widened her lead over Republican Doug Basler for the second spot, on Friday. It looks like she will advance to the November general.

"We're not counting our chickens before they hatch, but we're cautiously optimistic," Sarah Smith told KING 5 by phone Friday.

Sarah Smith was recruited to run by Brand New Congress, a group formed by Bernie Sanders supporters that aims to upturn the political establishment. She was following the path of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who unseated incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley, D-New York, in the June primary and was also backed by Brand New Congress.

The heavily Democratic 9th District covers parts of King and Pierce counties, including South Seattle, Bellevue, the Port of Tacoma, Renton, Kent, Tukwila, Des Moines, and Federal Way.
