A suspect who was killed in a shooting involving a Sound Transit deputy Thursday in Kent was armed with an AR-15 rifle, according to the King County Sheriff's Office.

The deputy was on a routine patrol of the Kent Station parking garage around 8:45 a.m. when he saw a suspicious, occupied vehicle. He learned from dispatch the vehicle was stolen, according to Ryan Abbott, a spokesperson for the King County Sheriff’s Office.

The deputy tried to take the 18-year-old driver into custody, but the driver armed himself with the AR-15 rifle. The suspect and the deputy struggled inside and outside the vehicle, according to Abbott. The responding deputy fired a single shot, hitting the suspect in the driver’s seat.
