First Lady Trump, Second Lady Pence to visit Coastal Bend Wednesday

First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence will be visiting the Coastal Bend Wednesday to meet with families affected by Hurricane Harvey and the first responders who are part of the recovery effort.

First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence will be visiting the Coastal Bend Wednesday to meet with families affected by Hurricane Harvey and the first responders who are part of the recovery effort.

According to the White House press office, the two will take part in a meet-and-greet with first responders upon their arrival in Corpus Christi. They will then travel to Rockport to meet a family whose home was destroyed in the storm, and tour the home's remains. They will also see the family's new FEMA manufactured housing unit.

During their visit, Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Pence are also expected to speak to elementary school students and faculty who were affected by Hurricane Harvey. They will end their visit with a stop at a local food bank to meet with volunteers and help sort boxes.

They will not be the Coastal Bend's first White House visitors since Hurricane Harvey. President Donald Trump made a stop in Annaville just days after the hurricane made landfall, drawing thousands of residents who lined the road to see him.

Vice President Mike Pence followed just days later with Texas Governor Greg Abbott, visiting a church in Rockport and even putting on some work gloves to help clear debris.

“The effects of the hurricane season are still being felt throughout southern portions of the United States and in Puerto Rico, and residents still need our help,” Mrs. Trump said in a news release from the White House Press Office. “While I am heartened by the strength and resilience of those impacted by the storms, I will continue doing all that I can to lend a voice and shine a spotlight on those who need assistance to rebuild and start new family traditions. As Christmas and the New Year approach, I encourage people to lend their time volunteering or providing financial support to those still reeling from the hurricanes.”

“Our hearts are encouraged by the people of Texas and their continued enthusiasm to help each other pick up the pieces and rebuild after Hurricane Harvey,” Mrs. Pence said in the same news release. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to accompany the First Lady in Texas and to visit with families and their children in the communities most impacted by the storm. Our thoughts and prayers remain with the people of Texas.”
