Federal Way man spends retirement protecting feathered neighbors

One Federal Way man's hobby has turned into a mission to watch the neighborhood flock.
Former software engineer Roderick Yee has become a defender of ducks and guardian of geese in his retirement.

Former software engineer Roderick Yee, 74, has become a defender of ducks and guardian of geese in his retirement.

Yee spends April through August, from 5 AM to 9 PM every day, keeping watch over the ducks and geese that use his apartment complex's manmade ponds as a swimming pool.

He helps the baby birds and parents cross the busy four-lane road in front of The Cove Apartments in Federal Way twice a day.

"I escort the families across the street and make sure the cars stop," said Yee.

Then, when his road duties are done, he heads to the pond with his camping chair, making sure no predators harm his flock.

"When they grow up and fly, I really am so relieved and it makes me feel great," he said.

Since he's getting older, Yee hopes that someone else in the neighborhood continues the watch when he no longer can. To him, the pay off is well worth the time spent outside.

"It's very satisfying knowing that you saved a life of baby wildlife," he said. "They'll grow up and have kids and their kids will have more kids and you prolong life."
