Search and rescue efforts were underway Tuesday for two overdue snowboarders near the Mount Baker Ski Area.

The men, who are from Bellingham, planned to spend Sunday snowboarding near the upper parking lot, according to Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. Their roommate reported them missing when they didn’t return home by early evening.

Crews found the snowboarders’ car in the parking lot Monday morning.

Search and rescue teams checked areas most used by backcountry skiers on Monday but found no sign of the men.

“The weather during the day created extremely hazardous conditions, heavy snow and high wind, creating avalanche and visibility concerns,” Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks said in a release.

Teams will continue to search as weather and conditions allow.

About 17 people from Search and Rescue, U.S. Border Patrol Search and Rescue, and the Mount Baker Ski Area assisted with the search.
