Weight discrimination may lead to a vicious cycle that increases the risk for future weight problems, a new study shows.

Research from the Florida State University College of Medicine found that people who experience weight discrimination were more likely to remain or become obese.

The researchers compared the height and weight of over 6,000 participants in 2006 and 2010. Those who perceived weight discrimination in 2006 were 2.5 times more likely to remain or become obese by the follow-up assessment in 2010.

Discrimination based on other factors such as race or gender did not appear to have the same impact on weight, researchers said.

The study was published in the journal PLOSONE.
