Increased DUI emphasis patrols during Cinco de Mayo weekend

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo this weekend? Law enforcement will conduct DUI emphasis patrols to curb people from driving under the influence.

A reminder to drivers headed out on the road this weekend: don't drive under the influence.

The Snohomish County DUI and Target Zero Task Force will conduct additional emphasis patrols Saturday night. Target Zero is the state's plan for "zero traffic related deaths and serious injuries by 2030."

An impaired driver doesn't mean the driver has only consumed alcohol; marijuana, illegal drugs, prescription drugs and even over-the-counter medications can make a driver become impaired.

Target Zero is part of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission’s goal to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries in the state by 2030.

The first two quarters of 2018 had 41 fatal crashes involving an impaired driver according to recent data published by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. There were 48 fatalities when an impaired driver was involved.

In addition to emphasis patrols on the road, the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board will oversee bar enforcement.
