Here's how to track the status of your tax return from the IRS

The Internal Revenue Service is still processing tax refunds and has extended the deadline to file this year until July 15. Here are tips for tracking your return.

Many people may be looking for ways to bring more money in during the coronavirus pandemic, and one of those ways could be this year's tax refund.

The Internal Revenue Service is still processing tax returns and has extended the deadline to file this year until July 15.

If you've already filed, here is what you'll need to track the status of your tax return.

What you'll need:

  • Your social security or ITIN number
  • Your filing status
  • Your exact refund amount

If you're using your phone, you can download the "IRS2GO" app. You can also go online and use the "Where's my refund?" tool. Or, if all else fails, you can call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

You can start checking the status of your tax return 24 hours after it was received by the IRS or four weeks after you mailed in your return.

The system usually updates overnight, so you only have to check once a day. And most refunds are made within 21 days or less.

And another reminder, due the coronavirus pandemic, you have until July 15 this year to file your tax return.
