In the past McDonald's has tried selling its customers on McHotdogs, McLobster and even McSpaghetti.

To date, those creations have failed to take off nationally — possibly to the relief of seafood and hot dog joints.

Now the Golden Arches is releasing a new menu item that appears to escalate its battle for breakfast with at least two well-known competitors: Dunkin' Donuts and Tim Hortons.

McDonald's is set to introduce Donut Sticks Feb. 20 at participating restaurants nationwide.

"We looked at several donut shapes, tested a variety of doughs and even worked to get the amount of cinnamon sugar just right for the recipe," Linda VanGosen, McDonald’s vice president of menu innovation, said in a press release. “We initially tested them in select Illinois restaurants in early 2018, and then again in October 2018, as it was critical that we perfected them before we brought them to our customers nationwide.

"We are thrilled to be making breakfast at McDonald’s even more delicious by introducing Donut Sticks,” she said in the press release.

The press release did not include the price of Donut Sticks.

Some Twitter users have expressed doubts and shared questions about the new menu item.
