It's beginning to look a lot like..... Black Friday? As a consumer reporter and advocate, I study price trends night and day. Many of the sales appearing this week in particular on products like TVs, laptops, gaming and video games are identical or within 10 percent of Black Friday pricing. That is rare for this time of the year.

I have a few theories that could explain the sudden increase in sales. Theory no. 1: merchants are nervous that consumers will be making fewer "luxury" purchases after heavy holiday-quarter spending, and they need some encouragement. Theory no. 2: a partial government shutdown could affect consumer behavior and people may be spending less, which worries retailers. Theory no. 3: Best Buy has too many TVs in stock, and they're trying to clear stock by creating incentives for you to discover their website and discover their TV deals.

My third theory is probably the most plausible but regardless of the reasoning, a video game sale today that includes price drops of $30 per game on average is superb.
