Tacoma influencer shares importance of holiday shopping at BIPOC-owned businesses

Even before the pandemic began, eight out of every 10 Black businesses failed within the first 18 months, according to the U.S. Census.

TACOMA, Wash. — While there has been some growth in the number of Black-owned employer businesses since 2017 - U.S. Census data reports eight out of every 10 Black businesses failed within the first 18 months.

The data also shows 58 percent of Black business owners describe the health of their businesses as “at risk” or “distressed.”

As a Black Tacoma business owner herself - Tash Haynes said she knows the importance of supporting BIPOC-owned businesses.

Haynes runs a wedding and portrait photography business with her husband Ike. She is also a social media influencer with more than 30,000 followers on Instagram.

Along with Made in Washington, Haynes told KING 5 she hopes to use her reach online to promote other BIPOC-owned local businesses across the state.

This holiday season, Haynes and Made in Washington shared some "top gift picks" with KING 5 on Saturday morning.

Each item featured, with the exception of jewelry, will be part of a holiday giveaway on Haynes' Instagram page.
