The 59er Diner: Where the milkshakes are the best in the world, and all the waitresses are named Flo

A Leavenworth area icon rises from the ashes to rock and roll again. 59er Diner is 2019's Best Road Trip Eats.

LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — Next time you drive over Steven's Pass headed toward Leavenworth, be sure to look on the right side of the road before the turnoff to Lake Wenatchee. There's a shiny new diner there that's actually a local tradition.

After the 59er Diner burned down in 2016, owner Joe Cannata had a new diner built on the east coast, then trucked across the country. It arrived in Washington aboard a handful of semi trucks in August of 2018. On the final leg of the new/old diner's journey home, Cannata joined the convoy, wearing an Elvis costume and blasting 50's oldies from a boom box.

Hungry happy locals welcomed their diner home. Today, the joint is jumping again, making milkshakes, serving burgers, and hosting car rallies. And as always, the entire waitstaff is named Flo. And the tradition that's gone on for generations continues to Rock and Roll.
