Seattle's Intiman Theatre presents new comedic play that brings up important issues

The Intiman Theatre showcases a new play called Native Gardens that tackles race and social justice issues through comedy.

Seattle — With it currently being National Hispanic Heritage Month, this new play comes at a great time.

This comedy, by playwright Karen Zacarias, is the Intiman Theatre's third main stage production of its 2018 Wild, Wicked, Woke Season.

Native Gardens is the story of two couples who become neighbors. One couple is Pablo and Tania, while the other couple is Frank and Virginia who pride themselves on their beautiful garden. When a small argument breaks out about the fence line, it escalates. Both couples show their true colors and make known their stance on race, class and privilege.

After the 2 p.m. shows on Sundays Sept. 6, 16 and 23, there will be discussions scheduled to talk about some of the topics brought up in the play. These forums will go over decolonization, the Latinx identity, social justice and other issues.

The play will be directed by a Seattle based director, Arlene Martínez-Vázquez.

It will be held at the Jones Playhouse from Sept. 6-30 of 2018.

The comedy will hopefully inspire people and start an important conversation within the community.

Actor Phillip Ray Guevara, who plays Pablo, and Intiman Theatre's executive director, Phillip Chavira, joined New Day to preview the play and talk about its message.
