New book explores the incredible power of the mountain lion

The puma, otherwise known as a mountain lion, has defied the odds in many ways. After facing endangerment, climate change and bounty hunters they still remain the fourth carnivore in the food chain.

Author Jim Williams joins New Day to discuss his new book, "Path of the Puma: The Remarkable Resilience of the Mountain Lion".

Jim Williams has grew up with wildlife, coming from the farm country of Iowa and then going on to study biology in San Diego. He is an award-winning, professionally certified wildlife biologist and has been working for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks for over 27 years. He studied mountain lion ecology for his Master's Degree on Montana's Rocky Mountain Front and has been working on mountain lion and other wildlife conservation issues in various roles ever since.

His book "The Path of the Puma: The Remarkable Resilience of the Mountain Lion" draws from lessons he learned about the mountain lions of North America and pumas of South America and why it is important to help protect all species in times of dire challenge and decline.

Large predators are vital to the ecosystem and Jim's book explores how not only are the predators themselves hunted, but also that the prey and grass they need to survive is in decline.

Large-landscape conservation is extremely important to ensure large predators do not go extinct. On January 29, 2018 Chile expanded their national parklands by over 10.3 million acres, with Tompkins Conservation donating one million acres.

Jim's book takes a look at how the puma, our neighbor, is thriving in a climate that is declining. He illustrates the fight by wildlife advocates, hikers and hunters, anglers and philanthropists, and biologists who advocated and lobbied for the creation of protected lands where the animals can live.

This book will open your eyes to not only the decline of pumas, but also show why conservation by everyone is vital to keeping a healthy ecosystem.
