'How to Be a Good Creature' teaches us to respect the loving animals around us

This new book features author Sy Montgomery's experiences with wildlife and pets, and how we can learn love and compassion from these tranquil creatures.

Seattle — Many people have a childhood pet, but for Sy Montgomery she wanted to learn more.

Her adventures with animals started when she was a child at the zoo, breaking free of her parents arms and running off to an exhibit.

Since then she has gone on to become a prize winning author doing research on the rarest and most fascinating animals in the world.

Her book, 'How to Be a Good Creature: A Memoir in Thirteen Animals', teaches people how to learn from the beings around us.

Sy has become friends with an octopus, tarantula, pig and other unique animals that she met on her journeys to the Australian Outback, Amazon and even her own back door.

Her book illustrates how these incredible creatures can teach you empathy, forgiveness, gratitude and kindness.

She joined New Day to talk about how this passion started in her life and what she wants people to take away from it.
