Author’s new book revives the tale of Seattle’s forgotten hockey champions

Did you know a team from Seattle won the first ever Stanley Cup in 1917?

SEATTLE — The Seattle Metropolitans were the first ever champions in the history of the National Hockey League. However, their success is largely lost to history because it came at the height of World War I, in the winter of 1917. Author Kevin Ticen’s new book “When It Mattered Most: The Forgotten Story of America’s First Stanley Cup, and the War to End All Wars” recounts the story of the Seattle Metropolitans, their teamwork, and the war that obscured their triumph. Ticen joins New Day Northwest to talk about his book and tell us more about the team who won Seattle’s first national title.

"When it Mattered Most" releases April 2. Ticen will be at Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum, 93 Pike St., #307, Seattle for a Q&A to celebrate his book launch. The event is free. Books will be available for purchase and signing.

Ticen will be at The University Bookstore, 4326 University Way NE, Seattle, on Tuesday, April 9, for a discussion and book signing starting at 6 p.m.
