Super Troopers 2 premieres tomorrow, April 20.
Super Troopers the movie was not a huge commercial hit back in 2001, but the critics...well, actually, they weren't thrilled about it either.
Somehow, this cannabis-infused comedy about prank loving police has had an arresting appeal.
"Being real friends in real life is something that kind of comes through," said actor Steve Lemme.
Now the cult classic is back with a sequel, made possible by 50,000 enthusiastic fans.
"We have 'troopies'," said Lemme.
Okay "troopies" who crowd-sourced millions of dollars for the movie's production.
"We tried to raise two million and we ended up raising four and a half milllion," said Director Jay Chandrasekhar.
Jay Chandrasekhar and his buddies from the Broken Lizard comedy troupe use the same creative process they've followed since their college days together.
"We're accustomed to just flying by the seat of our pants," said Lemme.
"When we write structure we're dead sober, but when we write some of those more flourishy jokes we smoke a little," said Chandrasekhar.
They worked very hard to make it look effortless.
"Jay's direction has gotten simpler over the years. I think now he says, 'say it faster'," said Lemme.
Like it's predecessor, "Super Troopers 2" boasts some impressive cameos, including Rob Lowe, as the officers get caught up in a border dispute between the US and Canada.
The shock factor of the original film may be slightly "blunted" this time around. The guys from Super Troopers 2 say they have plenty of surprises in store.
"The acting's really good, Oscar-worthy," said Lemme.
I was going to say that, but I think it sounds better coming from the actual actors.
