Sleep in the trees at this Lopez Island retreat

Hilltop Treehouse Retreat won Best Quirky Vacation Rental in 2019's Best Northwest Escapes! #k5evening

LOPEZ ISLAND, Wash. — EDITOR'S NOTE: The above segment originally aired in May 2019.

If your childhood dream of owning a treehouse never came true, you can rent the reality on Lopez Island.

Built originally as a writing retreat by owners Bob and his wife Sean, the Hilltop Treehouse has become one of the most sought-after destinations on Airbnb.

"People from all over the county have come here, other countries as well, every occasion you can think of," said Bob.

It's perched 275 feet above the Salish Sea, and only accessible by a suspension bridge.

"When you walk in the door you'll see on the immediate left are some beautiful single slab pieces of wood that are the counters in the galley," described Sean. "The main room downstairs has windows all around and cathedral ceiling."

At night you can bunk down in a couple of different spots.

"There are two places to sleep in. One in a couch downstairs that turns into a queen bed, and then up in the loft is a queen size platform bed. It is fabulously comfortable."

The treehouse even comes with a bathroom with a flushing toilet and a shower the exposes you to mother nature. Literally.

"The curtain only comes around to protect you from the human view," said Sean.

But the best views can be found outside the treehouse.

"The front deck has the most beautiful view of the upright head channel. And we can see both Orcas and Shaw across from us."

So if you think treehouses' are something you outgrow, a night or two here will have you feeling like a kid again.

"Living here is a really wonderful treat for the soul and the heart. And building the treehouse is a way we could share that," said Bob.

Hilltop Treehouse Retreat was voted Best Quirky Vacation Rental in 2019's Best Northwest Escapes.
